GarageBand User Guide for iPad

With the Schoolwork app, teachers can add GarageBand activities to handouts and assign them to their students. A project can also be attached to a handout and shared between teacher and students via iCloud Drive.

To use GarageBand with Schoolwork, the Schoolwork app must be installed on your iPad, and you must sign in with the Managed Apple ID for your school or class. If you need help with your Managed Apple ID account, contact your teacher (teachers should contact their school administrator).

Add an activity to a handout

Teachers can add a GarageBand activity to a new handout, and then post the handout to their students or save it as a draft in the Schoolwork app.

  1. In the Schoolwork app, create a new handout.

  2. On the handout, tap Add Activity, tap Apps, then tap GarageBand.

  3. Choose one of the available activities from the shortcut menu:

    • Audio Recording: Create an audio recording using the Audio Recorder Touch Instrument.

    • Create New Live Loops Song: Choose a Live Loops template in the Template browser to create a new song.

    • Create New Tracks Song: Choose a Touch Instrument in the Sound browser to create a new song.

  4. Fill in the title, due date, and other information for the handout, tap the Inspector button to choose a share option for the attached song, then tap Post to send the handout.

When a student completes an activity, it shows as Done on the handout, and shows the time taken to complete it.

Share a GarageBand song to a handout

Teachers can share a GarageBand song to Schoolwork and attach it to a new handout, then post the handout to their students. Students can share a song to an existing handout for their class.

  1. In the My Songs browser, tap Select, tap a song, then tap Share.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To share the song as an editable GarageBand project: tap Project.

    • To share the song as an audio file: tap Song.

  3. Tap Share with Schoolwork.

    For teachers: A New Handout window opens with the GarageBand song attached. The teacher can assign the handout to a class or to individual students.

    For students: A list of available handouts appears.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • For teachers: Fill in the title, due date, and other information for the handout, tap the Inspector button to choose a share option for the attached song, then tap Post to send the handout.

    • For students: Tap a handout to attach the song, then tap Submit.
